APC Dominates Nationwide By-Elections as APGA Wins Anambra, NNPP Takes Kano, PDP Secures Oyo
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday announced results from multiple by-elections across Nigeria, following vacancies created by appointments, deaths, and court judgments. The contests highlighted the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)’s sweeping dominance nationwide, but also featured notable victories by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo.
Edo State (APC):
In the Ovia Federal Constituency, Omosede Igbinedion (APC) secured victory with 77,053 votes, defeating PDP’s 3,838 votes. In Edo Central Senatorial District, Joseph Ikpea (APC) won emphatically with 105,129 votes against PDP’s 15,146 votes.
Anambra State (APGA):
APGA reaffirmed its stronghold in the South-East as Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu clinched the Anambra South Senatorial seat with 90,408 votes. APC followed with 19,812, YPP 6,538, ADC 2,889, LP 205, while PDP managed only 68 votes. Despite Peter Obi’s campaign for the ADC candidate, APGA held firm.
Ogun State (APC):
In Remo Federal Constituency, APC’s Princess Ayoola Adesola Elegbeji made history as the only female winner. She polled 41,237 votes, far ahead of the combined opposition’s 14,820 votes, with a margin of 26,417.
Kano State (Split: NNPP & APC):
Results were divided between APC and NNPP.
Bagwai/Shanono Constituency: Ali Lawal Alhassan (NNPP) won with 16,198 votes, beating APC’s 5,347.
Ghari/Tsanyawa Constituency: Garba Ya’u Gwarmai (APC) polled 31,472 votes, edging out NNPP’s 27,931.
Zamfara State (Inconclusive):
The Kaura Namoda South Constituency election was declared inconclusive. APC led with 7,001 votes, PDP had 5,339, while 3,265 PVCs were collected in affected polling areas.
Adamawa State (APC):
In Ganye Constituency, Misa Musa Jauro (APC) narrowly defeated PDP with 15,923 votes against 15,794 votes, a slim margin of just 129 votes.
Oyo State (PDP):
PDP scored a rare win in the South-West. Fola Oyekunle of PDP triumphed in Ibadan North Federal Constituency with 18,404 votes, defeating APC’s 8,312.
Kogi State (APC):
In Okura Constituency, Hassan Shado (APC) scored a landslide victory with 55,073 votes to PDP’s 1,038.
Kaduna State (APC):
Basawa Constituency: Dahiru Umar-Sani (APC) won with 10,996 votes, defeating PDP (5,499), SDP (811), and ADC (146).
Zaria Kewaye Constituency: Isa Haruna Ihamo (APC) emerged with 26,613 votes, ahead of SDP (5,721) and PDP (5,331).
Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency: Joseph Bagudu (APC) polled 34,580 votes, beating PDP (11,491), ADC (3,477), LP (1,453), and SDP (142).
Jigawa State (APC):
In Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Rabiu Mukhtar (APC) won with 38,449 votes, defeating PDP’s 13,359.
The by-elections further entrenched the APC’s dominance across much of Nigeria, winning resoundingly in Edo, Ogun, Kogi, Kaduna, Jigawa, and narrowly in Adamawa. However, the elections also revealed the persistence of strong regional opposition: APGA proved resilient in Anambra, NNPP maintained its foothold in Kano, while PDP showed strength in Oyo.
Women also made headlines, with Princess Elegbeji’s overwhelming victory in Ogun standing as a landmark moment for female representation in Nigerian politics.
