Ibadan Tragedy Aftermath: Naomi Silekunola, Oriyomi Hamzat, and Others Cleared of All Charges

The Oyo State Government has officially withdrawn all criminal charges against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. These charges were initially filed following a tragic stampede at a children's festive event in December 2024, which resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children.

Background of the Incident

On December 18, 2024, a children's funfair was organized at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The event turned tragic when a stampede occurred, leading to the loss of 35 young lives. In the aftermath, the Oyo State Government took legal action against key organizers, including Silekunola, Hamzat, and Fasasi, charging them with conspiracy, criminal negligence, and manslaughter.

Legal Proceedings

Following their arraignment, the defendants were remanded in custody but were later granted bail by the Oyo State High Court in January 2025. Each was released on a ₦10 million bail with conditions, including the surrender of their international passports and a prohibition on media engagements during the trial.

Withdrawal of Charges

On March 20, 2025, the Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, announced the withdrawal of all charges against the defendants. He highlighted that while the incident was tragic, the defendants had shown empathy and compassion towards the victims' families. Aikomo emphasized that the essence of prosecution is not to persecute but to serve justice, leading to the decision to discontinue the charges.

Reactions

The defendants expressed visible relief following the court's decision. The public's response has been mixed, with some appreciating the government's compassionate stance, while others continue to mourn the tragic loss and seek measures to prevent future occurrences.
