Tinubu Overhauls Leadership at Federal Universities, Renames University of Abuja
In a sweeping move to reform Nigeria’s higher education system, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced significant leadership changes across several federal universities. The restructuring, which takes effect immediately, includes the dissolution of governing councils, removal of key university officials, and the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University.
Key Leadership Changes
1. Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja)
The governing council has been dissolved.
Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been relieved of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.
Senator Lanre Tejuoso, formerly Pro-Chancellor of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor.
Senator Joy Emordi, who was Pro-Chancellor at Alvan Ikoku University of Education, will replace Tejuoso at Makurdi.
Professor Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months. She is ineligible to apply for the permanent role.
2. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu has been removed as Acting Vice-Chancellor before his tenure’s official expiration on February 14.
Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as the new Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months but will not be eligible for the substantive position.
The Pro-Chancellor, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, has been reassigned to the University of Uyo.
Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor. He previously held the same role at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.
3. University of Uyo & Federal University of Lokoja
Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, previously Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, is now Pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lokoja.
Gen. Ike Nwachukwu, formerly at UNN, is now the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo.
4. Alvan Ikoku University of Education & Nnamdi Azikiwe University
Senator Joy Emordi, former Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, has been succeeded by Senator Sani Stores.
Senator Stores was previously a council member at UNN.
Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, also a former council member at UNN, has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Restructuring for Accountability and Excellence
President Tinubu emphasized that these changes are part of his administration’s broader commitment to revitalizing Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. He stated that dynamic leadership and accountability are crucial to strengthening university governance and improving academic standards.
This leadership overhaul is expected to set the foundation for improved management, innovation, and excellence in Nigeria’s federal universities.
