Russia and U.S. Agree to Restore Embassy Staffing in Key Diplomatic Move

Senior diplomats from Russia and the United States met in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, reaching a landmark agreement to restore full staffing levels at their respective embassies in Washington and Moscow. This decision comes as part of broader diplomatic efforts to ease tensions and advance negotiations aimed at resolving the nearly three-year-long war in Ukraine.

The meeting in Riyadh brought together U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, signaling a notable shift in U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump. While no Ukrainian representatives were present, discussions touched on the ongoing conflict. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later emphasized that Kyiv would not accept any settlement that excludes its direct involvement. Meanwhile, European allies have raised concerns about being sidelined in the negotiation process.

Speaking to The Associated Press, Rubio confirmed that both nations had agreed to restore their diplomatic presence in each other's capitals. The move is considered essential for facilitating future diplomatic engagement and strengthening communication channels between the two powers. Embassy staffing levels had significantly declined in recent years due to mutual expulsions and deteriorating relations.

Additionally, the Riyadh talks laid the groundwork for a potential high-level meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Russian foreign affairs advisor Yuri Ushakov clarified that while a summit is under consideration, no official date has been set.

As the war in Ukraine continues, the reestablishment of diplomatic ties between Washington and Moscow underscores renewed global efforts to seek a resolution. The success of these discussions could have far-reaching implications for future diplomatic strategies and international relations in the months ahead.
